In 1980, the English football scored very little appreciation. As a result, un-organized matches, poor facilities for the players and lack of supporters were seen by this league. Also The English clubs were banned from the European football competitions. This was the result of the stadium disaster of Heysel in 1985. Similar disastrous event occurred in 1989. Such negativity had affected the performances of the clubs involved in the English football club. During the year 1988, 10 clubs from the Premier League were threatened to separate in order to grab higher profits on television. This was the time when a strong foundation and restructuring of the English clubs was needed. In 1991, an agreement known as “Founder Member Agreement” was issued. The basic rules and principles for the establishment of the Premier League were listed in this agreement. The Premier League got its freedom in order to set its own sponsorships and broadcast. Three major clubs from the Football League resigned in February 1992. Three months after this the Premier League Limited company was founded.
The Premier League was determined to take the English football sky high. As a decisive step, the league handed over the television rights of the matches to Sky TV. At that time fans watching the football matches on TV was rather a new concept. However the combined efforts of the Premier League and Sky TV, made the aim to accomplish. The Sky TV used its best marketing strategy to pull the audiences to the TV. The primary deal was made for a hefty amount of £ 191 million over the duration of five years.
Later the sponsorship for the Premier League played a major role in development. In 1993, the Premier League grabbed a sponsorship worth £12 million from Carling over the period of four years. Hence forth the Premier League was renamed as “FA Carling Premiership”. Barclaycard offered a new sponsorship worth £48 million in 2001 for the duration of three years. The renewal price of the same in 2007 is £ 65.8 million over three seasons.
Until the year 1992 there were 11 Irish and Non–British football players in the Premier League. This number has increased to 250 in the year 2007. The international players playing with the Premier League have helped to develop and shape up the English football. Initially the Premier League comprised of 22 football clubs. Later, the number kept on increasing and decreasing. But the quality of the game and the standard of players are always maintained by the Premier League. The most victorious team in the Premier League is Manchester United.
