History of FIFA

The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) is an international body governing the football associations all over the world. Right since its inception in 1904, FIFA plays an important role in the development of the sport and is one of the largest associations supporting the sport. FIFA has contributed immensely in making football one of the worlds number one spectator sport.

In the early 1900’s, the Olympics held a Football tournament. The winners of this tournament were considered to be the world champions. But by the 1920’s, however, there were a large number of professional leagues which had evolved independently making the Olympic Games, then restricted only to amateur athletes, no longer the premier echelon of completion in football sport.

With a majority of European countries taking interest in the sport, the idea of founding an International Football Federation began taking shape in Europe, the aim of which was to make the role of the English who had founded their Football Association way back in 1863. There was a crucial need of an internationally recognized body governing the sport. The credit of getting the world’s best football teams title to participate for the World Cup title goes to a group of French football administrators led by the innovative Jules Rimet. The original gold trophy had the name of Jules Rimet embossed on it.

The Federation International de Association (FIFA) was founded in the rear of the Union Françoise de Sports Athletiques in Paris on 21st May 1904. The act was signed by the representatives of the authorized association from countries like France, Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Sweden and Switzerland.

With the signing of this pact the first FIFA rules and statues were grafted which determined gave an exclusive identification to associations, rules regarding players that they are forbidden to play for different association simultaneously, the announcement of a players suspension was to be recognized by other associations with the organization and the match rules which were to played according to the Laws of the Association. These regulations came into effect on 1 September 1904.

FIFA staged its first World Cup at the Centenary Stadium in Uruguay on 18th July 1930 marking a new eon in the football history. The event proved to be an astounding success both for the sport and in the financial terms. As a result of this FIFA continued to develop with a number of federations and associations joining in. Improving on their organizing skills began staging improved football tournaments with not only an increase in the number of teams but also with a huge spectators flocking to these events. FIFA celebrated its fiftieth anniversary with an astonishing 85 associations affiliated as its members. The TV transmission of the World Cup also contributed towards the worldwide expansion of FIFA with a dramatic increase in the sports popularity.

Since its inception the FIFA flagship has being growing in size and prestige by all terms.

Today the FIFA World Cup has people from all over the world under its spell. FIFA undoubtedly has become the greatest single sporting event of the modern world.
