David Robert Joseph Beckham was born on the 2nd of May 1975 at the Whipps Cross Hospital in Leytonstone, London. As a child he used to regularly play football in the Ridgeway Park, Chingford. He attended one of the Bobby Charlton’s football schools, in Manchester. During this period, he won a chance to be a part in a training session as part of a talent competition. In 1986, he was a Manchester United lucky charm for a match against West Ham United.

David Beckham is an English football midfielder. He played and was a captain for Major League Soccer, Los Angeles Galaxy. Currently, he is a member of the England National team. His career took a high leap when he signed a professional agreement with Manchester United, thus making his first ever team debut in 1992 at the age of 17. During his tenure, United won the title of Premiership for a total of six times, the FA Cup twice as well as the UEFA Champions League in 1999. However, he left Manchester in 2003 to sign for Real Madrid. He remained in the Real Madrid team for four years.

He has been twice, a runner up for the FIFA World player of the year. He was in the recent years, the world’s highest paid footballer. In 2003 and 2004, he was the most searched sports personality of all sports topics on the Google website. Due to such universal acknowledgment, he has become a privileged advertising brand and a top fashion icon.

From 15th November, 2000 to 2 July 2006, David Beckham was the captain of England. As a captain he made 58 appearances and finished his tenure as a captain after the 2006 FIFA World Cup finals. However, he continued to make his contributions for the England National team in the 2007 competition.

Around January 2007, it was declared that Beckham will leave Real Madrid, through whom he had achieved his major trophy, a La Liga Title. During the announcement, it was also made clear that he would be signing a five year contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy. His new contract with the Galaxy with effect from July, 2007 offered him the highest ever salary for any MLS player in the history of football.

David Beckham’s fame expands beyond the football pitch. His name is instantly recognizable with multinational companies like IBM and Coca-Cola. He has become famous along with his wife, Victoria, who even contributed to his celebrity status beyond football. Together, the duo have become well-paid spokespeople, sought after by clothing designers, fashion magazines, health and fitness specialists, hair stylists perfume and cosmetics manufacturers, exercise promoters and spa companies as well.

David Beckham has supported UNICEF since his football days at the Manchester United. In January 2005, he became a Goodwill Ambassador, mainly for UNICEF’s Sports for Development program. Currently, he is a spokesman for Malaria No More, which is a New York based non-profit launched in 2006. The mission of such organizations is to end deaths which are caused by malaria in Africa.
