Steven Gerrard the Liverpool skipper is an important part of the English squad. Things have not been going pretty well for him at Anfield because of their poor performance in the league as well as the speculations regarding the selling of the club. However, the star midfielder has turned his attention towards the national squad which is going to play at Wembley against Switzerland. Gerrard has admitted in a recent statement that he gave to the press, that he would be honored to be appointed as the England football captain. Capello is known for making the most unexpected of decisions but Gerrard believes in the Italian and expects to make him the skipper.
However, the Italian manager has announced that he is not going to finalize any captain until the world cup qualifications which begins in the month of September. The international friendly against Switzerland is a big thing for Capello also because it would be his first game since he replaced Steve McClaren. Regular captain John terry has been out for a pretty long time because of the injury he suffered in a premiership game against Arsenal. This has given a chance to players like Steven Gerrard, Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen to claim captaincy of the English National squad.
Gerrard quoted “It would be a great honor. I think we’ve got to respect the fact that John Terry is still our captain, so until that changes John is still our leader”.
