Drogba has been stripped off the African player of the year awards. Didier Drogba couldn’t believe that this could happen to him. The Ivory Coast striker says that he does not wish to be the African player of the year in the near future after Fredric Kanoute got the 2007 title by default. The African superstar is representing Ivory Coast at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana and is claiming that he had already won the award but had to go to Togo to receive the award. Drogba said “I was told if I didn’t appear the rules would change and the prize would go to the runner-up. This attitude doesn’t honor Africa so I have pulled out of future elections”.

Drogba is really disappointed with the whole issue and believes that it made no sense to hold the ceremony in any other country when such a big event is going on in Ghana. Didier Drogba was the winner of the 2006 African player of the year award but claims that he would boycott the future elections. Drogba claims that he had enough reasons for not coming to Lome (Capital of Togo). First of all he had to play against Guinea on Monday which was the quarter final match of the championship and secondly Ulrich Stilieke (Ex Ivory Coast coach) lost his son. Whatever has happened is a big blow for the Ivory Coast superstar Didier Drogba as well as for the Confederation of African Football
