Liverpool Breaks the Winless Streak

February 3, 2008 Sunday was a big day for Liverpool and brought fresh air at Anfield. Liverpool ended its horrible winless streak after beating Sunderland 3-0 in which all the three goals were made in the second half. This win was an important one as it eased the pressure on the players as well as on the Liverpool Boss, Rafael Benitez. The Red side has not won a single Premiership since the Boxing Day and had to struggle a lot to win over the Black cats. The five straight games which Liverpool didn’t win made it sure that the Anfield side will not play the Champions League next year but goals from Peter Crouch, Fernando Torres and Skipper Steven Gerrard showed a ray of hope.

Sunderland also worked a lot in the game and even appealed for a penalty when it seemed that Carragher had handled the ball in the box, but this appeal was left unheard. After a frustrating first half, Liverpool pulled itself up and moved to fifth place in the Barclays Premier League table. Sunderland has not won a single game at Anfield since 1983 and this record continued on Sunday. They were playing without Dwight Yorke and Anthony Strokes as they were injured but had Michael Chopra back in the squad.

The goals were scored by coach, Torres and Gerrard in the 57th, 69th and 89th minute respectively. The last goal came from the spot which was scored by Steven Gerrard. Let’s see how Liverpool fairs after this morale boosting victory.
