The fans at Pompey had started to think that the name of their club was Portsmouth Nil till the time Benjani came to the rescue of the Pompey’s. Mwaruwari Benjani ended Portsmouth’s home goal draught after he scored another fiery hat-trick against Derby County.

Portsmouth has had six consecutive goalless home Premiership games before this one. But the Zimbabwean who is the only African on Portsmouth and who is not on international duty ended this dry run of the Pompey’s. This dry spell lasted for 578 minutes when Benjani scored on the turn and headed home near the closing minutes of the first half. The Zimbabwean completed the treble at the opening of the second half when just after eight minutes after the break he scored another spectacular goal. This was the strikers 2nd Hat-trick with the Pompey’s after he scored a treble against Reading in September last year and that was the last time when Pompey scored at home till today.

As Kanu, John Utaka, Sulley Muntari and Papa Bouba Diop are away for one month due to the African Cup of Nations, the African striker was supported by the newly signed player David Nugent who has been signed for 6 Million Pounds by Portsmouth. The striker from Zimbabwe has completed a dozen of premiership goals till now.

After losing to Portsmouth the Rams have entered the Relegation zone and very close to facing their doom. The Rams have lost 18 successive games in the Premier League and they know that this is not good news.
